 Dog getting zoomies on walk?!
« Thread Started on Oct 9, 2009, 12:02am »

Boris has decided Walky time is a good time to get Zoomies.
Normally he walks alright but lately he gets a wild hare up his bum and randomly goes nuts.

Obviously he has energy he needs to get out but we live in an apartment and I can only take him somewhere to just run free a couple times a week.

He's yanked me over, and managed to pull his collar over his own head. He pulls as far as he can one way and bolts the other to give himself as much momentum as possible. I find this very frustrating. Of course after he gets free he wants me to chase him for the next half hour :-/ I try to stay calm because I don't want him to associate coming back with punishment but this is really frustrating! Has anyone else had this problem?

Yup, bruiser and sissy do it to me from time to time. They both wear a pinch collar and normally all I have to do is a quick jerk on there leash and tell them no, and then settle and they calm down.

I would suggest when taking him on his walks... Pull his collar up closer to the back of his head and tightening it a bit so that he can not pull it over his head. He will prob fight you a bit when he realizes he no longer can pull it off. But that will make it atleast so that he can not get his collar off. And when he starts pulling to try and get the zoomies give a quick jerk on the leash and try your best to continue walking. I know our big furkids have there ways of pulling us around sometimes. Believe me i know. Sissy has drug me quite a few ft before tring to go play with the stray cats we have running around here. But try your best to stand your ground.

Something that could help during the walks to get some energy out. Do you have something like a backpack or something he can carry. Giving him a job during walks tends to wear them out a bit faster even on short walks.

I hope that helps a bit... keep us posted on how he is doing...

I am thinking about investing in a prong collar just to try and get some control back when he goes nuts. Usually he is very good and doesn't pull, but something sets him off into Zoomie mode and he forgets everything. So far I have been avoiding places that seem to set him off most, I did put a tighter collar up high on his neck so he can't pull free now. (his main collar is lose on him even at smallest setting)

Thanks for your tips! I'll see if I can find away to get him to use more energy on the walk without taking me out in the process.

I was having a similar problem in front of the vet for our weight and shot visit.(last ones till next year) And my vet has Danes herself she suggested a head collar. It causes no choking or pulling and is very comfortable for both dog and owner i bought one and it works like a charm. I bought one for the mastiff mix female no more pulling and lots of control. And no pain or discomfort to the animal. I have complete control over Drake and the loop that goes over there noses are cushioned

I have same problem with Duchess too. Duke do really well but Duchess, Im just waiting to see when I get hurt LOL Im getting pinch collar for Duchess very soon if she dont get better. Duke have his pinch collar and when he see the pinch collar, he get so excited because he know he get to walk outside the fenced in yard. I make them sit down when they start to go crazy for about a minute or so, I wait until they calm down and start walking again. It seems like it working for me. Good Luck!

It just takes some work and consistency,....when at the vet for example...I walk a few steps, then if they pull or get too excited I stop and they have to sit. Then we go again. If they are still really crazy I turn around and go right back out the door and start over. At the door, when I open it they do NOT enter until I say so. Then the same drill. I would not avoid situations that set them off...I would jump right in and expose them as much as possible to get them used to it. I walk Meeka and Hogan on a two-dog leash, yep both dogs on one leash and I NEVER lose control of them. If you try to control a dog that outweighs you with brute strength, you will lose...or possibly injure yourself! That's why my philosophy is that you must outsmart them with good, consistent training. Show them what is acceptable and what isn't. And if you approach a situation and they wanna start zoomin, you turn on your heel and go the other way enthusiastically, draggin them behind you and when they turn to follow along, praise like crazy.. They learn with consistency that only calm behaviour gets them near other dogs, children, whatever gets them so riled up in the first place...then when you try and they wanna act up again, have them go into a more submissive position like a sit or down..if they won't listen, you take them and walk away. The key is regular consistent walks and repetition..and they will learn. I had my nine year old walking Meeka AND Hogan tonight, with no worries, no pulling, and there were people, dogs and children around.

Oh man, Mox gets the urge to zoom on walks. We live in an apartment complex and she has a retractable leash. We have established a "zoomin' spot" where we take her every single walk and let her zoom. She has gotten good about knowing just how long her leash is and turns before she gets to the end, although sometimes she catches me off guard. Once she gets those zooms out, she's pretty good on the walk.

I've been thinking of getting her a harness, so we have more control over her chest area and she will get my corrections a little better.
