 Bloat First Aid Kit
« Thread Started on Oct 18, 2009, 2:32am »

Hey everyone!

I am always worried about bloat, every time my boy seems a little listless it's the first thing I check for, and I'm sure many of you feel similar.

You can get most of these supplies at a local hardware store. This website explains everything.

This may not be for the squeamish but I would give it a shot in a heartbeat if I thought it would save my friend's life.

Basically you use a block of wood to hold your dog's mouth open and lubricated tubing to put down the throat to the stomach to try and release the air. It probably won't work if torsion comes in and the stomach is twisted over 90 degrees but if you can deflate the stomach before it causes torsion all the better. (also I know some people have had their dog's stomach tacked to try and prevent torsion occurring at all, which would greatly increase your chances.)

I would still take him to the vet afterward but If it's the middle of the night or you're a ways away from one this may save his life.

I hope everyone is doing well!

It would scare me to do something like that. Ive seen those before... and i wouldnt trust myself to stick a tube down a dogs throat at a critical time like that... atleast not with out some kind of training...

But if you know what you are doing yeah i say those are great to have incase of bloat...

Yeah, I've been thinking about it for a few days...

I was talking to my mom about it, and she was a Vet Tech for a few years, I myself am planning on starting school to become one. She was telling me its a whole different ballgame when its your own dog you are trying to take care of.

I'm not sure if I would be able to trust myself to not do more harm than good under that stress... :(
