I don't know a lot but I do know that it takes a lot of time, patience, maintenance and care to keep them "trained" to stay up after the surgery and to keep them clean.

ear cropping is a lengthy and very attention needed process. It takes approximately 8 weeks for the ears to heal and to stand on their own. It could vary a little because its always different with every Dane. The surgery itself is usually pretty painful. But most Vets provide the proper medications to keep the Dane comfortable! After having the surgery, the dane usually comes home the same day. And usually the owner will use their own at home products to tape inside the ears to "train" them to stand up. The most common object is a tampon applicator. You have to pay close attention to the taping process and cleaning process. The tape and tampon has to be replaced at LEAST once a week to prevent infections! You have to keep an eye on the dog to make sure teh dog isn't messing with his/her ears which could cause damage. The taping itself is done because after the dog has surgery to cut the ears, the cartilage is still soft. By keeping them taped up in an upright position, it allows the cartilage to harden that way, thus the ears are standing straight up! You also have to watch the ears during the healing process because you need to have some type of bridge between the ears, so one ear won't lean in further than the other. Usually it can be corrected by using medical tape!
been there, done that. My parents cropped one of their danes when I was younger. I had to help do the dressing changes and comfort the dog. They don't like being messed with after that surgery thats for sure!

Good luck finding a vet willing to crop your pups ears. Cropping is becoming less and less popular. But yes, I believe its 6-10 weeks. After a certain age, you can't do it because teh cartilage in their ears will be hardened too much and the procedure has a greater chance of failing.

Dane ears can be cropped up to 12 weeks although most vets like to do it between 8-10 Weeks my vet is doing Aurora on the 21st of may as she won't be old enough until then ... part of it is weight as most Danes don't do well under anstictic(sp)... There is a great 3 part video on you tube showing how to properly tape Dane ears... The guy that made the video did a really good job of showing the easiest way to tape Dane ears ... it was great ... I will try to find the link again
